Emilio Romig (#9) of Steinbach Black Wings Linz, time 40:00 was involved in an incident deemed as Slashing (IIHF Rule 61). The video evidence was sent to the win2day ICE Hockey League PSC, which determined the incident to be worthy of supplementary discipline – Category 2 – ‚Reckless‘.
Tuesday night in Linz, Linz forward #9 Emilio Romig was involved in an incident deemed as slashing on Bozen D-Man #7 Ryan Culkin resulting in a 5 Minute and Game Misconduct penalty assessed by the on-ice officials.
As the video shows, Romig skates to a loose puck along the corner boards, positioning himself so that he boxes out his opponent, which lead to contact into the direction of the boards. Following up on the play, as the second player, is Culkin who engages Romig. Immediately following the contact to Roming, Romig turns and slashes Culkin forcefully to the neck area.
This is slashing.
It is important to note, this is not a case of an off balanced player steading himself off of contact. Rather, Romig’s use of the stick is reckless, in an attempt to apply extra force to his opponent after the initial contact. While the PSC deems the incident, not an ‚intentional‘ act to hurt, players are responsible for their sticks at all times. What causes this play to rise to the level of supplementary discipline is the reckless nature of the contact, coupled with the force of the blow and the location where it lands on the opponent.
The ICE Hockey League Department of Player Safety has suspended Emilio Romig for 3 games and fined 750.00 euros.

Die Serie gegen Bozen ist sehr hart und emotional und ich bin ein Spieler der vor keinem Gerangel zurückschreckt. Als ich nach dem Pfiff einen Schlag bekommen habe, wollte ich mich dafür revanchieren. Jeder der mich kennt weiß aber, dass ich kein dreckiger Spieler bin und ich deshalb auf keinen Fall seinen Kopf anvisiert habe. Weil ich mir in meiner Zeit in der Liga noch nie etwas zu Schulden kommen habe lasse, bin ich über die Höhe der Strafe doch sehr geschockt. Vor allem in dieser entscheidenden Phase der Meisterschaft habe ich damit nicht gerechnet. Es tut mir sehr weh, dass ich meiner Mannschaft dadurch so schade!“
